New Zealand¹s Rugby Golf Opens First Course in Europe
13 July 2005

GolfCross, New Zealand's own Rugby-style golf game, will soon be played in Germany which is the first European country to set up a commercial course. More courses are planned for France, Denmark and Hungary in the near future.

Nürnberg based promoter, Michael Stemp, announced recently that GolfCross Europe will open a six goal course in Wiemersdorf, 40km north of Hamburg on June the 24th. It has taken two years to find the right land, he said, but next week our fairways will finally resound with the high-pitched hum of your lovely rugby-shaped golf ball.

Course manager, PGA accredited coach, Sven Wittenburg, says there is a lot of interest in the new game. ³New Zealand has a big reputation in Germany for creating exciting outdoor activities like Jet Boating, Bungie Jumping and Zorbing so just the fact that this is a Kiwi thing makes it very special. Of course the rugby-shaped golf ball gets people really talking but
it¹s the greater control players have over the ball and the strategic nature of the game that we expect will get lots more people into golf in this country. Then, because we don¹t have greens with GolfCross, it not only extends the season in the Winter but it is far more eco-friendly which is very important now in Germany.

Could this be a way of sneaking rugby into Germany through the back door? Cartoonist, writer and inventor of the ball and game, Burton Silver, is skeptical. GolfCross may use a rugby-shaped golf ball and rugby-style goals but it's still essentially a golf game. It certainly has created a lot of interest around the flight properties of the oval ball shape generally and
the fact that you cant hook or slice it, and that in itself may draw attention to Rugby in Germany.

A large press turn-out is expected for the opening with over 80 European print journalists and 2 TV channels confirmed. The NZ Consul general, who is resident in Hamburg, will speak at the launch where NZ food will be served.

Two GolfCross courses have been confirmed for Ireland and the first South American course will be opened in July near Bariloche in Argentina. END
